Iron Bodyguard 1973

Set against a backdrop of reformist zeal and political intrigue, the film tracks the life of the poet Tan Sitong, Elliot Ngok Wah—son of the governor of Hubei—who is drawn into a widening web of courage, loyalty, and danger. He is initially impressed when Wang Wu, Chen Kuan-Tai steps in to stop two battalion commanders from arresting the associates of a confessed pickpocket, a bold move that signals a shift in how power is exercised. Inspired by this act, Tan Sitong follows Wang Wu and earns his respect as he helps fend off a assault, forging a budding alliance born from mutual need and shared danger.

As the story unfolds, Tan Sitong and three others are elevated to the cabinet and begin to draft a list of reforms intended to modernize the state. Yet these reforms run afoul of the Empress Dowager Cixi, who sees the changes as a threat and uses the charge of subversion to target Kang Youwei, the head of the Ministry of Works. The political chessboard becomes even more complex when Tan Sitong comes to the aid of Kang Youwei, and Wang Wu lends a hand in helping Liang Qichao escape, with Liang Qichao portrayed by Dean Shek Tin. The confrontation intensifies as Cixi issues an imperial edict to remove from office and prosecute the ministers of the Privy Council, including Zhang Yinhuan, Xu Jingcheng, Yang Shenxiu, Yang Rui, Tan Sitong, and Liu Guangdi, signaling a brutal crackdown on the reformist faction.

In the heated clash between reform and resistance, Commanders Pei Feng, Chiang Tao and Wen Ping, Chiang Nan lead an army that captures several of the wanted men and dispatches them to the main prison. Wang Wu hatches a plan to rescue the prisoners as they are marched toward the execution grounds and requests Wen Ping’s cooperation. The supposed alliance fractures when Wen Ping betrays the plan, informing the others of the trap, and the ensuing attack by Wang Wu and his allies is repelled by Wen Ping’s riflemen. Wang Wu escapes, albeit wounded, and the weight of the loss settles heavily on him.

In the aftermath, Tan Sitong and the other captured prisoners are beheaded, and Wang Wu, overwhelmed by guilt and the cost of their ambitions, blames himself for the tragedy. Undeterred by the tragedy, Wang Wu confronts his foes with martial skill, forcing a confrontation with Wen Ping and Yan Feng, Lu Ti in the role of Yan Feng, a clash that ends with Yan Feng’s death when a volley of rifle fire from General Chong’s troops—General Chong, Tung Lam—strikes him as he attempts to withdraw. The climactic moment comes as Wang Wu exits the fray only to be shot by the riflemen, the hero’s end matching the brutal logic of a period where reform comes at an enormous human cost.
