A neurotic young psychology student, struggling with low self-esteem, unexpectedly crosses paths with a free-spirited and gregarious woman, working at the Paris Health Club in New York City. In a moment of spontaneity, she proposes that they marry on a whim to see how well it works out. To their surprise, both sets of parents, both of whom are analysts, gift the newlyweds a year-long counseling session as a wedding present. This proves to be more beneficial than anticipated when the groom discovers that his impulsive bride has a much more complicated past than he ever envisioned.
