Cleo Rowan Blanchard is a bright, introverted teenager who lives in the shadow of her older sister, Molly Paris Berelc, whose popularity makes her the center of attention at school. While Molly gleams in social circles, Cleo shines in the classroom, yet she often feels unseen and a little sarcastic about the world around her. Their dynamic sets the stage for a story about talent, belonging, and the cost of being noticed.

When Cleo’s science teacher, Mr. Perkins Alex Désert, sees her potential, he assigns a challenging project: identify a mystery substance and transform it into its crystal state. Cleo dives into the work at home, pouring focus and curiosity into every detail. The quiet routine of home life collides with the bustle of Molly’s lacrosse dinner for teammates, and a moth flits past, drawing Cleo’s attention away from her experiment. A clumsy spill of unknown chemicals into Cleo’s solution creates steam that makes the moth momentarily invisible, and Cleo spends the rest of the night chasing a ghostly insect through a crowded house.

The drama escalates when the moth reappears, drawn to a light in the bathroom. It meets a fiery end when it is killed by the light and falls into a cup of water containing an antacid Molly is about to drink. Unknowingly, Molly swallows the moth, which renders her invisible. The next morning dawns with Molly unable to be seen, and Cleo reveals what happened. With a critical lacrosse season opener looming—an event college scouts will be watching—Molly decides to mask her invisibility by wearing a Halloween costume, but the costume itself becomes invisible too. Cleo steps up and wears the outfit, pretending to be Molly at school so her sister can still compete.

To reverse the situation, Cleo uses a microscope from the science room to examine Molly’s cells and figure out how to turn visibility back on. Meanwhile, Molly uses the distraction to navigate social situations differently: she overhears Cleo talking with George Karan Brar about Cleo and tries to secure a date by pretending to be her sister, asking out Carter Will Meyers. But George soon learns about Molly’s invisibility, and Molly’s boyfriend Coug Austin Fryberger grows uneasy as she avoids him in the mix of events.

As Cleo grows into the lacrosse game, her initially rough start gives way to confidence with Molly’s support, and the team fights for a win. The central mystery—whether Molly’s invisibility will become permanent—deepens when Cleo and George conclude that they must reproduce the exact results from Cleo’s earlier experiment to craft an antidote before midnight, exactly twenty‑four hours after Molly first swallowed the moth. They plan to replicate the experiment, then test the antidote at school, all while keeping Molly’s secret intact.

The sisters race between science and social life: they head to a cemetery to collect another moth while George goes ahead to set up at school. A tense moment of honesty arises between the sisters in the cemetery, and Cleo admits she admires Molly’s “light,” even while feeling invisible herself. She worries that Molly’s popularity is a fragile flame, but Molly explains that her own brightness is not just about being seen; it’s tied to their shared talents and care for one another. The confession brings them closer and clarifies that Cleo’s brilliance and Molly’s charisma can illuminate together, not compete.

Back at school, Cleo, George, Carter, and Coug converge at a barn near Romp the Swamp, a Halloween party where time is running short. They push ahead with the antidote as Mr. Perkins moves through the party, and Molly explains Cleo’s work to him when necessary. The plan falters briefly when Molly has already consumed some antacid earlier, but Cleo quickly adjusts by adding a dose of that same ingredient to the antidote. The result is dramatic: Molly’s invisibility breaks, and she becomes visible again just as the clock nears midnight.

The success is not just practical; it earns Cleo a chance to present her findings at a professional seminar. Mr. Perkins invites her to share her discovery with the New Orleans Association of Applied Scientists, signaling a professional validation of Cleo’s scientific mind. As the curtain falls, Cleo gains a deeper appreciation for the delicate balance between being seen and being understood, recognizing that visibility can be about more than popularity and that true light comes from blending intellect with empathy for those around her.
