Suhasini (Jayasudha) is a bright, carefree young woman who is deeply in love with her boyfriend Bharani (Sarath Babu). When her father is transferred to Mumbai and falls seriously ill, her world begins to crumble: Bharani stops replying to her letters, and the distance between them grows deeper. In the midst of this upheaval, Sugunakar Rao (Chiranjeevi), a colleague from her father’s office, becomes a steadying force for her and soon asks for her hand in marriage. Grateful for his support, she agrees, even as she confesses that she once had a boyfriend who seems to have forgotten her.

Yet the alliance with Sugunakar Rao reveals a darker side: he is a sadistic and jealous husband who torments her, driving her to seek a divorce. As a divorced woman with an infant in her care, Suhasini heads to Chennai to build a new life and career.

In Chennai, she finds a supportive circle at work, especially Janardhan a.k.a. Johnny, a widower and gifted ventriloquist who speaks through his puppet, Junior (Kamal Haasan). Johnny is drawn to Suhasini and harbors a quiet love for her, though he remains reticent about his feelings.

An unexpected twist of fate brings Sugunakar Rao’s mother to the city, securing a job as a maid in Suhasini’s home. Around the same time, Suhasini discovers that her letters to Bharani never reached him because they were intercepted by his mentally challenged sister. This revelation rekindles her hope and she briefly renews contact with Bharani, sensing life might still offer a chance at happiness.

But the plot thickens as Sugunakar Rao arrives in Chennai as her boss, now remorseful and eager to repair the past, even proposing another chance at marriage. The situation becomes a delicate balance of three men vying for Suhasini—her ex-love, her ex-husband, and a silent admirer who lurks on the sidelines—while she weighs the future against the ghosts of her past.

As events unfold, Suhasini comes to see that Sugunakar Rao may be trying to destroy her life and that Bharani, hampered by hesitation, has started to look toward another relationship. Johnny finally speaks up, confessing his love, but Suhasini chooses a path of dignity: she rejects romance for the moment, preferring to admire and respect Johnny from afar. Realizing that a fresh start is needed, she decides to move to a different city to begin anew, with Johnny offering his enduring support and a promise to wait for her. Her mother-in-law accompanies her to help care for her grandson, and together they set out to build a hopeful future.

In the end, the film leaves Suhasini at a crossroads where resilience and grace guide her toward a new chapter, underscored by the quiet, steadfast presence of those who care for her and the quiet, steadfast love of Johnny as a potential future, should the tides of time bend in that direction.
