Wesley is an aspiring writer who finds himself late to his first day as a runner on the set of a zombie film. His very first task is to escort an actor to a doctor, but outside the studio a real zombie outbreak rages in the nearby village, and he leaves the actor behind without realizing it.

On set, a scene meant to be a sultry moment quickly spirals into chaos. [Wesley] is forced to witness or participate in a disruption as the actors start fighting, and when the moment returns for him to step in, Jessica Valentine pulls out after an embarrassing mishap that leaves him humiliated and exposed.

Encouragement comes in the form of Tane Henare, who shares a story about his championship run and suggests it should inspire him not to quit. But the production crew is fractured: Greg Winston tries to warn everyone about the zombies, yet his method acting only sinks in for a few. [Jessica Valentine] grows restless, insisting she go to the village to use the toilet and snubs the locals, prompting tension between her and the rest of the team. The line between director, actor, and human gets blurrier as the on-set power dynamics flare. When SMP scolds her for bossiness and questions her long-vanished career prospects, she heads toward a long drop, where a chilling hand suddenly emerges. In a grim turn, [Wesley] is forced to dig a hole in the woods so she can use the bathroom, only for Jessica to be surrounded by zombies and attacked offscreen.

Waking from a nap and unable to locate Jessica, Susan Ford later arrives on set, but she is now a zombie in the eyes of the crew. Misreading the situation, [SMP] believes she’s on drugs and has her hauled to a trailer, only for the zombie bite to creep closer. [Wesley] encounters Greg Winston and some grisly “props,” discovering with horror that the “props” are real body parts. He fights off [Greg Winston] and narrowly survives the encounter, eventually watching a corpse awaken and feed on itself. Realizing the danger, he rushes to help [Susan Ford], and together they confront the oncoming tide of zombies as the village actors start a blood-soaked onslaught.

The chaos escalates as the zombie horde overruns the set, and the crew is forced to improvise for survival. The prop master, Randy Bateman, begins killing the actors who beg for mercy, convinced they are not human anymore, until his fatal impulsivity ends with a self-inflicted gunshot. The death toll climbs, and even a notebook-bearing loss—Harold—meets a brutal end.

Behind the scenes, [SMP] reveals the brutal truth of his long road to funding, admitting it took ten years to secure support after the film commission refused help. In a shocking turn, Adam Harrison encounters Jessica with her breasts exposed and, not realizing she’s a zombie, engages in sex with her. The survivors gather to make sense of what happened and, if possible, to escape the nightmare. The revelation that Tane Henare has been lying about his glory run reframes the group’s choices, yet his final stand shows a fierce commitment to the idea that the path to glory is worth any cost.

As the danger intensifies, Tane Henare pushes through to fuel a fire and drive a fuel shed into action, aiming to clear a path to safety as zombies swarm. [Susan Ford] remains by [Wesley]’s side, and the two of them work to escape a collapsing world—though the price is steep. Adam’s return to the fray as a zombie complicates their escape, and a brutal confrontation leaves [Wesley] wounded—his hand bitten, forcing [Susan Ford] to sever his limb with a hot cast-iron pan to halt the infection. The shed explodes in a blaze of destruction, taking [Tane Henare] with it and wiping out many of the surrounding creatures.

With the odds stacked against them, the pair press on, driven by a stubborn survival instinct. They reach a farm where a gas truck could become their lifeline, but a sudden attack by a zombie farmer changes everything. [Adam Harrison], now a dangerous figure, stalks them, and a brutal choice tests their bond and resolve. In a decisive moment, [Wesley] shoots [Adam Harrison] in the head to end his rampage, and the two finally flee into the woods, grateful to be alive but wary of what the world now holds.

They push toward a town, only to be knocked back by another wave of undead. Then a startling twist erupts: the “town” is revealed to be a scene being shot for a zombie movie directed by [Wesley], a framing device that recontextualizes the events as fiction within the film’s own universe. The fate of [Wesley] and [Susan Ford] remains uncertain, and the film hints that the world might eventually return to normal, even as the truth of their survival—and the nature of the apocalypse—remains unresolved.
