As Zi Hao’s grades begin to rise, he becomes a rival to the school’s top student and a close, if tense, friend to Jayden Lee Jun Wei. Jayden’s controlling mother Fixates on maintaining his position at the summit of Class 6A, and she warns him to keep his distance from Zi Hao, planting seeds of strain in their friendship. The tension between the two families adds a layer of family politics to the classroom rivalries, turning every test into a test of loyalties as well as intellect.

Into this crowded, pressured environment steps Mr. Lee, a newly appointed form teacher who captures the class’s admiration with a simple act: solving a complex algebra equation. Off to the side, Zi Hao’s mother faces a collapsing marriage. Her husband in China refuses to provide financial support, and the family is forced from their semi-detached home to a cramped HDB flat. A divorce message arrives during the upheaval, deepening Zi Hao’s sense of uncertainty and underscoring the real-world stakes behind every school assignment. In response to mounting pressure, Zi Hao’s mother signs him up for an English speech competition, pitting him against Jayden and other classmates and setting up a spotlight moment that could change the trajectories of their lives.

The competition topic—“My Mother”—puts Jayden under emotional strain as he grapples with his fraught relationship with Sophia, a classmate whose own feelings complicate the scene. Sophia [Jae Liew] faces the pressure of performance and the sting of social scrutiny as she contends with her emotions, and Zi Hao is given the same topic, delivering a fifth-place showing that nonetheless marks a personal victory in perseverance.

But the pressure festers into manipulation. Sophia, feeling cornered and resentful, nudges Jayden toward sabotaging Zi Hao by planting cheat notes in Zi Hao’s pencil case. The tension spills into the Science Preliminary Examination when Zi Hao is found with the notes. He is questioned by [Mr. Lee] and [Mr. Lim], and the truth emerges: the handwriting isn’t his. The film closes on a quiet, hopeful note: Jayden awakens from the coma and decides to enroll in a neighborhood secondary school rather than a prestigious institution, illustrating the central message that school ranking is not the sole measure of success.
