The opening narration sets the stage for a tale fitting I Love a Mystery, focusing on the uneasy alliance of two private detectives, Jack Packard Jim Bannon and Doc Long Barton Yarborough, as they cross paths with the enigmatic Jefferson Monk George Macready in a nightclub. Monk explains that a chilling prophecy foretells his death within three days and hires the pair to protect him from a grotesque, peg‑legged threat who roams the streets carrying a valise—allegedly meant to carry Monk’s severed head to an ancient secret society. When Packard and Monk’s female companion head outside, the one‑legged intruder appears but slips away, leaving the investigators with a strange sense of danger lurking in the shadows.
As the investigation unfolds, Packard grows certain that someone is maneuvering Monk toward suicide. He uncovers a motive: Monk’s two‑million dollar inheritance would go to charity rather than to his wife Ellen Monk Nina Foch if Monk divorces her. With Ellen seemingly poised to gain from Monk’s demise, the conspiracy behind Monk’s life hangs in the balance, and Packard and Long begin to untangle a web of motives and misdirections.
Monk’s paranoia intensifies as he starts eliminating his wife’s associates one by one, including the peg‑legged stalker, in a deadly campaign. The detectives realize the case is more personal than they first thought, and Monk grows convinced that Packard and Long have uncovered the truth and pose a direct threat to him. Undeterred, the two investigators press on, seeking to safeguard Monk while unraveling the fatal plot that surrounds him.
The tension peaks as Monk attempts to turn the tables and kill the investigators, only to have his plan foiled by Packard and Long. With his schemes exposed and his power fading, Monk flees in a speeding car. In a final twist of fate, the pursuit ends in tragedy: Monk loses control of the vehicle, and his own desperate flight culminates in a catastrophic collision, an ironic and cinematic decapitation that seals the story’s doom.
