I Am The King 2012

In a Joseon-era kingdom, the aging King Taejong Park Young-kyu watches his two elder princes fail to win his favor. When they fall short, the king commands the younger heir, Choong-nyung Ju Ji-hoon to prepare for the throne, even as Choong-nyung secretly longs for a quiet, book-filled life far from royal duties.

After hours of contemplation, Choong-nyung escapes by climbing over the palace wall, seeking a breath of freedom away from coronation rituals. Out in the world beyond the gates, he meets a bad-tempered, drunken slave named Deok-chil, who is at the palace to rescue the love of his life, imprisoned for being the daughter of a suspected spy. Deok-chil’s rough edge and urgent mission collide with Choong-nyung’s desire to disappear from royal expectations.

Deok-chil and Choong-nyung cross paths in a moment of chance and recognition: the slave bears a striking resemblance to the prince, so Choong-nyung seizes the opportunity to disguise himself as a slave, and the two exchange clothes. The plan seems simple, but fate has its own reckoning. In a terrible twist, Choong-nyung is knocked unconscious, wakes to find himself mistaken for a slave, and Deok-chil is unexpectedly thrust onto the throne.

As Choong-nyung ventures beyond the palace walls, he begins to see the world through the eyes of ordinary people—their struggles, their hunger, and their daily battles. The escape pulls him away from the sweetness of scholarly life and into a broader reality where the lines between ruler and commoner blur. This sudden exposure to life outside the gilded gates slowly reshapes his understanding of duty, leadership, and what it means to lead a nation.

What unfolds is a story rooted in identity and power, where a prince’s reluctance to rule collides with the unexpected responsibilities of a throne he never truly claimed. The emotional pull comes from Choong-nyung’s internal conflict: clinging to his beloved books and a peaceful life, he also faces the possibility that true leadership may require stepping into a world he once avoided.
