Malee Viyada Umarin is a farm girl from Northern Thailand who decides to sneak away to Bangkok with her boyfriend, Chate. But shortly after they arrive, Chate disappears, and Malee finds herself trapped in a love hotel, where she is forced to sleep with men to pay for the room. At first, the change is shocking and she is horrified by what she must do, yet time pushes her toward a new grim reality as she confronts the demands of this abrupt new life.

With the debt mounting and little choice, she adapts and begins to earn money as a prostitute, a path that allows her to buy new clothes and send money home to her father, whom she tells that she works as a seamstress. As she strips for clients, her father stays busy on the home front, putting in new windows on his house, a quiet parallel that underscores the gap between her rural origins and her urban survival. The situation strips away her former identity and replaces it with a practical, if painful, independence she learns to manage day by day.

In her community, Malee earns a reputation as someone you can turn to for help when a newcomer arrives and needs guidance.
