Vernon Potts [Pat Cardi] is a shy yet clever high school student who endures bullying and cruel behavior from both peers and teachers. Despite the rough treatment, he forms a quiet friendship with Robin Jones [Rosie Holotik], a bond that rubs their classmate Roger Davis [Mike McHenry] the wrong way. The dynamics at school are tense, with pressure from instructors and the social pecking order shaping every hallway encounter.

Late one night, Vernon sneaks into the science classroom to feed the class guinea pig Mr. Mumps and to test a new drug for his biology project. He discovers that the drug has turned Mr. Mumps into a small, snarling creature. The situation spirals when Mr. Griggs, the school’s unsettling janitor, catches Vernon disposing of the cat’s body and responds with brutal force, beating him and then killing Mr. Mumps with a pestle. Griggs’s anger only grows as he taunts Vernon and forces him to drink the drug himself; the moment Vernon ingests it, he convulses, becomes violently aggressive, and kills Mr. Griggs by dunking him into a barrel of sulfuric acid. The scene establishes a chilling pattern: Vernon’s experiments unleash violence, and attempts to hide the evidence become increasingly risky.

The next day, Griggs’s dissolved remains surface in the science class, drawing the attention of Lieutenant Bozeman [Austin Stoker], a determined detective who arrives to investigate. He briefly questions Vernon, but Vernon stays silent, offering little to the case as the evidence begins to point elsewhere. The mystery grows when Vernon is pulled into a separate conflict: his English teacher, Mrs. Grindstaff [Joye Hash], assigns him to attend every literature club meeting for the semester to earn the credit needed to graduate, a penalty that clashes with his own academic focus. The club meetings coincide with Vernon’s library visits, so he chooses a darker path—spending the meeting in the science room and brewing another batch of the drug, which he drinks as the session ends. After everyone leaves, he transforms and terrorizes Mrs. Grindstaff, ultimately killing her in a brutal, calculated fashion.

Grindstaff’s body is discovered the following morning, and Lieutenant Bozeman returns to the case. Vernon confesses to Robin that Mr. Mumps is dead and hints that he plans to abandon the biology project. Robin suggests that he work with her on her biology project instead, offering a chance at redemption, which Vernon accepts with a wary sincerity.

In the locker room, Coach McCall [John Niland] scolds Vernon for missing P.E., noting that Vernon’s chemistry and biology abilities have eclipsed gym class. He then offers a controversial deal: Vernon could skip P.E. for the rest of the year to help a football player in need—none other than his bully Roger [Mike McHenry]—by letting him cheat on an upcoming exam. McCall asks Vernon to consider it and to call him at 10:00 p.m. that night if he agrees, keeping the arrangement secret.

That night, while Vernon awaits a response, Bozeman and his squad unexpectedly cross paths with Coach McCall, who manages to talk his way out of arrest. Vernon, already under the influence of another drug batch, is confronted by fear and paranoia as he heads back to the classroom. He encounters Roger, who warns that the police may release him due to lack of evidence and pressures Vernon to meet him at the school in an hour. A tense confrontation unfolds when Vernon arrives: he brews yet another batch, drinks it, and is startled by a noise at the classroom window. Believing it to be Roger, he flees, but is met by Robin, who warns him of Roger’s intentions. Vernon then confesses to Robin that he is the killer, but his resolve collapses as he transforms again and chases her through the halls.

The standoff ends in a blaze of gunfire as Bozeman and his squad close in. Vernon fights Roger in a brutal confrontation, and the police shoot Vernon to death just as the danger peaks. The film closes with Robin mourning Vernon’s lifeless body, leaving a haunting portrait of a young man whose scientific curiosity spiraled into deadly violence.
