Tae-jun, Park Hae-il, a professor at Seoul National University, and Oh Su-yeon, Soo Ae, the deputy director of a prestigious art gallery, are a power couple whose impressive talents have thrust them into the upper echelons of society at a surprisingly young age. Their ascent, however, is driven by a shared hunger to go further, to bend systems to their will, and to redefine what success looks like in a world built on prestige and influence. In their carefully curated life, they navigate a web of political ambition, art-world rivalry, and personal risk, all while maintaining an image of flawless control.

Tae-jun’s rise begins with a bold policy idea and a dramatic act. He proposes a low-interest citizen’s bank designed to curb gentrification and, in a moment of public courage, rescues an elderly man who tries to self-destruct during a protest. The combination of policy savvy and humanitarian spectacle earns him national attention and a coveted nomination from a conservative party, signaling the start of a political career that feels almost predestined. Meanwhile, Oh Su-yeon, who has long coveted the director’s chair at the gallery yet finds herself repeatedly pushed aside by a director backed by conglomerates and a chorus of junior staff, aligns closely with her husband’s ascent, hoping that power in parliament will translate into power behind the scenes for her own ambitions.

But the couple’s gilded world is tempered by temptation. Tae-jun begins an affair with a young female aide who was once his student, a lapse that strains the bond between them even as they remain perpetually entwined in each other’s presence. Soo-yeon, for her part, knowingly tolerates the infidelity in pursuit of influence and opportunity. The situation becomes even more tangled when Soo-yeon rekindles a relationship with her ex-boyfriend, a promising artist, and the two pursue their affair all the way to Paris, where a private moment is captured on camera. The scandalous footage falls into the hands of Chief Min, a rival in the race for the director’s role, threatening Soo-yeon’s carefully guarded ambitions and forcing her to confront a different kind of exposure.

In a high-stakes bid to salvage her position, Soo-yeon targets the gallery’s chairman, offering herself in exchange for the directorship. The chairman—who claims to create “art” by having sex with celebrities on canvas and preserving the imprints—sees through the artifice of power and exploitation, yet the arrangement creates a dangerous equilibrium that could reshape the entire institution. Parallel to this, Tae-jun, now a conservative candidate, seeks corporate funding for the citizen bank but discovers the party is colluding with those very firms, using the bank as a political tool. The film reveals that even the elderly man Tae-jun rescued was paid to stage the incident, underscoring the depth of manipulation surrounding their lives.

Just before Soo-yeon’s deal reaches its peak, the current director and his wife burst into the room, turning the table and forcing a reckoning. In a savvy counter-move, Soo-yeon offers the director a compromising video of the chairman in exchange for real power, a gambit that ultimately elevates her to co-director alongside the chairman’s son. The balance of power shifts in unsettling ways, and the couple must confront the hollow core of their ascent.

In the end, unable to endure the moral rot of their world, Soo-yeon and Tae-jun make a bold, defining choice. On the opening day of a new exhibition, Soo-yeon publicly screens her own sex tape as a provocative art piece, delivering a blunt, self-critical confession of her desires and exposing the corruption woven through the gallery. The moment earns thunderous applause from both Tae-jun and the audience, a visceral acknowledgment of the couple’s reckoning with their own ambitions.

Liberation follows ambition. Tae-jun relinquishes his parliamentary seat and passes evidence of the conservative party’s corruption to a prosecutor, choosing a quieter life that still bears the scars of what they’ve endured. The two redefine their paths: Tae-jun runs a modest citizen bank, and Soo-yeon forges her own independent exhibition space, free from the trappings that once defined them. Their journey, at once piercing and cathartic, leaves a lasting impression of what happens when power, art, and desire collide and are finally confronted.
