Viktor Sumarokov, nicknamed Sumrak, is an experienced thief-recidivist who holds real authority among the prisoners, portrayed by Sergei Bezrukov. When a careless moment leads to the injury of a venal colleague, the prison system turns to Yevgeny Koltsov, a former Ministry of Internal Affairs operative and a well-deserved hero from Chechnya, to confront the danger.

Lieutenant colonel Vyshkin, Vladimir Menshov, the penitentiary chief, arrives with a clear request: protect Koltsov from the menacing threats within the zone. The plan to shield Koltsov sets off a dangerous chain of moves as the ringleader’s closest aide learns of Vyshkin’s intent. To secure Koltsov’s protection, the aide uses the promise of an early release to persuade another inmate authority, Shaman, to spark a riot and remove Koltsov, aiming to undermine Vyshkin.

A fierce confrontation erupts, leaving Koltsov wounded and Sumrak also hurt as they are taken to the hospital. While recuperating, Koltsov realizes he cannot survive in the prison environment for long unless Shaman’s influence wanes. He turns to his combat friend, the commander of the special forces of the Federal Penitentiary Service, Sergey Gagarin, to help him escape from the hospital; Aleksei Kravchenko brings this character to life.

As the riot is being suppressed, Sumrak is wounded by the special forces, and Koltsov places his trust in Sumrak, taking him along. Gagarin then hides the escapees in a pioneer camp named Shipboy, a place short on male leadership. There, they reinvent themselves under new identities—Viktor Sergeevich Romashkin and Yevgeny Dmitrievich Ubegaev—and the camp’s children, while honoring pioneer traditions, test their superiors in every possible way.

What unfolds in Shipboy reveals growth and resilience. The former convicts push themselves to become the best squad in hopes of earning a trip to St. Petersburg, and through these trials they uncover strengths they never suspected they possessed. The story remains grounded in a tense balance between danger, survival, and personal transformation, as the two men navigate loyalty, power, and the chance for a new beginning.
