Fred von Wellingen, Francis Lederer heir to a wealthy industrial family, finds himself drawn to Lia Török, Käthe von Nagy, a cabaret bartender who captures his heart. He proposes marriage on a playful condition—that Lia agree to dance with him as part of their engagement. She accepts, bringing a spark of life into Fred’s world, but their relationship triggers a sharp clash with Fred’s aristocratic kin who look down on Lia’s working-class roots and on her eccentric father, Bela Török, S.Z. Sakall, a former vaudevillian whose antics at a formal dinner scandalize the family.
