A naive but compassionate prison chaplain is unexpectedly assigned as vicar to the small, prosperous English town of Orbiston Parva, replacing the cleric whom the Bishop favors in order to keep the Despard family and their factory firmly connected to the church. This mix-up sets the stage for a story about how one person’s simple belief in kindness can collide with a tightly wound local power structure.
The new chaplain believes that charity and forgiveness should be practical tools of daily life. He begins to act on that belief in ways that surprise and unsettle the town: he appoints a black dustman as churchwarden, he takes in a family being evicted from an illegal encampment, and he persuades the landowner Lady Despard to provide food for the church to distribute freely to people who might otherwise go hungry. At each step, his good intentions reveal cracks in a town that prides itself on being devout and orderly, yet often leaves its poorer members unseen.
As these initiatives ripple through Orbiston Parva, the local traders complain that their customers have vanished and their livelihoods are at risk. The chaplain tries to explain his actions as acts of mercy, but the reaction is swift and mixed, and the tension escalates. Soon he finds himself besieged in the church hall, surrounded by opponents who see his reforms as a threat to the town’s carefully balanced social and economic order. Only the arrival of the police prevents a confrontation from spiraling into violence.
In a bid to save face, the Bishop crafts a carefully staged solution. The chaplain is reassigned to a quieter parish, while the “troublemaker” is sent to a remote Scottish island called Ultima Thule and elevated to a fantastical title—“Bishop of Outer Space”—within a British space operation based there. It is framed as a necessary compromise that will restore harmony to Orbiston Parva while preserving the church’s prestige.
Yet the arrangement takes a new turn when the pilot chosen for the first rocket becomes hesitant or untrustworthy. In a surprising reversal, the chaplain steps into the breach, accepting the role of pilot and representing an unlikely bridge between faith, science, and risk. The story reaches its striking moment as he is last heard broadcasting hymns over the space capsule’s radio, leaving the town to wonder whether mercy and duty can truly coexist amid cosmic ambition.
Through these events, the tale examines how a community measures its faith against its own behavior, how institutions respond to disruptive reform, and how one man’s unwavering belief in helping others can catalyze consequences that reach far beyond the town’s borders. It remains a quiet meditation on second chances, responsibility, and the unpredictable ways compassion can redirect a community’s future.
