Gowri (Leela Chitnis) is a widowed woman living a modest life in the village of Haripur with her two sons, Gungaram and Jumna. Their daily lives are marked by hardship, as Gowri struggles to make ends meet, and their circumstances are further strained by the social class divide. Gungaram, played by Dilip Kumar, is a spirited and kind-hearted young man who works tirelessly, often as a servant for the local zamindar’s family, while Jumna, portrayed by Nasir Khan, is a diligent student, dedicated to his studies and aspiring for a better future. Despite Gungaram’s rough exterior, his primary goal is to support his brother’s education, demonstrating his deep love and sense of responsibility.
Tragedy strikes when their employer, a man named Hariram, falsely accuses Gowri of theft. This accusation results in a house search, evidence being discovered, and Gowri being arrested. The villagers rally to her aid, managing to bail her out, but the shock and humiliation prove too overwhelming, leading to her untimely death. Following her passing, Gungaram makes a solemn vow to care for his younger brother as they transition into adulthood.
As grown-ups, these characters face new challenges. Gungaram remains a resilient and fearless individual, often confronting the oppressive zamindar without hesitation. Meanwhile, Jumna adopts a more cautious, methodical approach and later joins law enforcement, inspired by a police officer who takes a paternal interest in him. Jumna’s journey ultimately takes him back to his village, where he is faced with a moral dilemma — to uphold the law or protect his family.
The story takes a dramatic turn when Gungaram rescues Dhanno (Vyjayanthimala), a local girl, from the advances of the zamindar, whose cruelty and greed are central to much of the film’s conflict. Enraged and humiliated, the zamindar retaliates by framing Gungaram for theft, which leads to Gungaram being imprisoned. After his release, Gungaram, driven by a desire for justice and revenge, confronts the zamindar and commits a daring act of rebellion by attacking and robbing him. This act of desperation pushes Gungaram further into the outlaw world, and he joins a band of bandits living in the wilderness, becoming an outlaw feared by the local authorities.
Meanwhile, Jumna has risen through the ranks to become a police officer, embodying law and order but also torn by familial loyalty. When Jumna comes back to his birthplace, he finds himself on a collision course with his brother. The story culminates in a tense showdown, where duty and family loyalties clash, forcing both brothers to confront their beliefs and choices. The film explores themes of justice, sacrifice, and the enduring bonds of family against a backdrop of social injustice and personal struggle, culminating in a compelling narrative of love, loyalty, and moral conflict.
