Drawing loosely from BVS Rama Rao’s Godavari Kathalu, this period drama unfolds in 1986 in Bangarappeta, a riverine village near Rajahmundry. Malli Aadhi Pinisetty and Chitra Lakshmi Manchu are a newlywed couple who find themselves fighting for survival as the mighty Godavari overflows and swallows their world. With the waters rising and the community strained, they decide to share the darkest moments of their lives with each other, using their memories as a fragile bridge to hold on to hope while the flood rages around them.

Malli is introduced as an honest fisherman who works under Sambiasivayya, a shrewd port figure who dreams of Scott-like success on the water’s edge. His simple ambition—to own a boat—collides with the entangled affairs of Sarala Taapsee Pannu, Sambasivayya’s daughter, who fixates on Malli and uses her influence to coerce him into a closer proximity. She presses him to escort her to a film, threatening to reveal their proximity to her father if he refuses. He complies, but the strains of this liaison begin to pull at his life and ambitions. A turn of misfortune follows when Malli is arrested by police for allegedly producing ganja, forcing him out of work and shaking his mother’s faith in him. The truth behind the ganja affair emerges: Chandra, a fellow fisherman, had produced it, and Chandra confesses that Sambasivayya had ordered the scheme to break up the budding connection between Malli and Sarala. Malli confronts Sambasivayya’s home only to find him away; Sarala mocks him in a moment of intoxicated bravado, reminding him of his failed defiance with a sharp taunt, “> You seem to have forgotten that you are a man after the beating you got from police due to my dad.” In a night of anger and consequence, Malli and Sarala’s encounter leads to a sexual moment, a painful sign of the fraught boundaries and damaged trust that haunt both families as Sarala’s imminent marriage looms on the horizon.

Meanwhile, Chitra’s backstory unfolds in tandem as a counterpoint to Malli’s turmoil. She is found as a child by a couple who raise her with affection, including their son Suri. Financial struggles push Suri’s mother into a wary relationship with a town doctor, a liaison that Suri mistakes for something between his mother and Chitra. Growing up, Suri becomes a mason with a passion for cockfights, while Chitra works under Dhorababu Ravi Babu, a notorious womanizer. A chilling moment occurs when Chitra and Suri’s mother visit the doctor’s clinic; the doctor’s misconduct is witnessed by Suri, who misreads the situation and drifts away from Chitra, finding companionship with Bangari Suja Varunee. The tragedy deepens when Suri’s mother dies and Chitra’s betrothal to an older man is arranged. Chitra pleads with Suri to call off the engagement, but he refuses, clinging to what he believes he saw at the doctor’s place. Truth surfaces, reshaping Suri’s heart, and the narrative’s tension thickens.

That night, Dhorababu attempts to molest Chitra, drawing a violent response from Suri. In defending his beloved, Suri is attacked by his father and is gravely wounded while the two struggle. Chitra reaches the hospital with Suri, only to find the doctor who lusted after her still serving patients. In a stark, desperate moment, she offers herself to the doctor for a night, while Suri undergoes treatment. Suri dies from blood loss, and Chitra retaliates by pouring hot water on the doctor.

Out of these intersecting storms, Malli and Chitra finally acknowledge a mutual love and a desire to build a life together. Yet fate remains cruelly unpredictable. A perilous bridge becomes their final lifeline: Malli finds a makeshift bridge, rescues Chitra, and the two climb toward safety at its apex, overcome with the relief of being alive and together. In a symbolic act, they cast away the ring gifted by Sarala and the chain given by Dhorababu into the raging flood, symbolizing a new beginning. They begin to cross the bridge, moving forward into an uncertain future with a hard-won, fragile hope.
