In the opening scene, a young mother tends to her crying infant in a stroller when suddenly, a water balloon crashes down, dropped by Tomas. When Tomas’ mother discovers his antics, she decides it’s time for him to stay with his older brother, Sombra, who is studying in Mexico City, and Sombra’s roommate, Santos. After a lengthy bus ride, Tomas arrives at his brother’s dimly lit apartment late at night, finding it void of electricity.
The next morning, a lack of breakfast sets the tone for their meager living situation. Tomas quickly learns how they can obtain electricity from the neighbor below, involving a girl with Down Syndrome who offers an extension cord in exchange for a captivating story. As he browses the newspaper, Tomas stumbles upon an article about Epigmenio Cruz, a beloved Mexican folk rock musician, who is currently hospitalized due to liver issues. Tomas, who has revered Cruz ever since his father introduced him to a cassette of his music, passionately suggests they embark on a quest to visit him.
With determination, Tomas and Sombra join a protest march set against the backdrop of the 1999 student protests in Mexico City. Their journey leads them into a hospital where Cruz was staying, but the trail soon takes them to a local zoo, where they learn that he no longer works there. After a series of twists and turns, they finally track down Cruz in a bar, where Sombra earnestly heaps praise upon him. However, the musician, overwhelmed, soon drifts off to sleep, leaving the brothers to ponder the fleeting nature of fame and the complexities of life.
