Dick and Mandy, once friends at school, now newlyweds, settle into their first home together—a council-owned house that sits right next to their Religious Knowledge teacher, Ralph Butcher, and his wife Christine. The arrangement quickly folds into a tense intertwining of private life and neighbors, as the everyday friction of marriages and friendships bleeds into the couple’s new domestic space. The house becomes a stage where affection, annoyance, and ambition collide: Dick and Mandy spar over whether to start a family, while the Butchers’ earnest, orderly domestics contrast with the couple’s more exploratory energy.

From the start, the couple are not alone in their new life. Sharon—another school friend—and Mandy’s ever-present sister Gloria drift in and out, each visit adding its own pressure and humor to the mix. Gloria, in particular, is a source of constant motion and concern: a well-meaning, meddlesome sister who longs to escape the claustrophobia of her mother’s domineering household. Night after night, Dick grows wary of Gloria’s repeated visits, juggling his frustration with the need to keep the peace.

The tension comes to a head one afternoon when Gloria visits while Sharon and Mandy are out. Dick, trying to catch Grandstand, loses his temper as Gloria lingers, and in a moment of unguarded anger he tries to eject her from the Butcher home. Gloria locks herself in the toilet, and the scene spirals as Christine steps in, gradually coaxing Gloria out. A dangerous confrontation ensues: Dick grabs at Gloria, intent on removing her from the house, but Ralph intervenes and stops him. The fallout is abrupt and emotional. A furious Dick storms out, with a sobbing Mandy following after being slapped by Christine, leaving the house in a charged, fragile silence.

The adults do their best to repair the breach. Ralph and Christine ease Gloria back toward steadiness with cups of tea and a quiet nap on the sofa. Christine then crosses to the next-door kitchen to try to calm Mandy and Dick, proposing that they take Gloria home to her mother. The journey back becomes a contentious taxi ride, filled with bickering but also the slow return to a sense of family duty.

That evening, a shift begins to take shape. Dick and Mandy decide to pursue starting a family after all, while at the Butchers’ house Christine articulates a different longing: she wants a sex life and a real family, a desire that seems to drift past Ralph as he remains absorbed in his reading. The conversation hints at a gulf between personal desire and the quiet, methodical routines that define communal life.

Time passes, marked by a Christmas-style pause in the action. Several months later, the trio—Dick, Mandy, and Gloria—have found a fragile reconciliation. Mandy carries a pregnancy, kicking with the quiet promise of a new life. Gloria, now seemingly with a boyfriend, drops by for a listen to the baby’s movements, signaling a sense of hopeful change. As the evening winds down, Gloria heads off to a party, and Dick, with a playful edge, wonders aloud whether the boyfriend will actually show up. The scene closes on a note of domestic comedy and evolving relationships, suggesting that even amid discord, family bonds and shared history still offer a path toward a brighter, more crowded future.
