In a lively Mexican village, the male mice lament that Speedy Gonzales keeps getting between them and the village’s pretty girls, sparking a plan to remove the speedy intruder from their town. To carry out the scheme, they enlist the help of the notorious hunter Sylvester, hoping the cat will do what the mice cannot: chase Speedy away for good. The rodents go so far as forging a note that appears to come from Speedy, declaring that he will pull Sylvester’s tail out by the roots, a threat that the cat seems ready to confront when the moment arrives.

What follows is a string of classic cartoon misadventures and escalating slapstick. Sylvester attempts to trap the fast-running hero, first unloading a shotgun and then tossing a hand grenade into the fray, with each explosive mishap ending in comic chaos and unintended consequences for the pursuer. Speedy, unfazed and ever resourceful, even belts out La Cucaracha in Spanish, including a cheeky line about the cockroach not having any marijuana to smoke, lending the chase a playful musical undertone that lightens the perilous antics.

The cat’s final ruse unfolds as a wind-up female mouse doll is wheeled out as the ultimate decoy. Speedy seizes the wind-up toy and makes a break for safety, darting into a box of red hot peppers that turn the pursuit into a fiery, headlong sprint. Sylvester, hot on the trail, repeatedly pauses to seek relief at a nearby water cooler, each sprint between sips a reminder of the escalating pepper-heat of the chase. In a last, sly twist, Speedy has swapped the water for tabasco sauce at the cooler, a cunning switch that sends the hungry cat skyward—launching him roughly 500 miles (about 800 kilometers) high into the horizon.
