An unnamed screenwriter drives out into the desert and hears a tale from the Old West about Jud McGraw, James Caan, a rugged stagecoach driver whose life spirals after a ruthless gang led by Nimmo robs him and frames him for gold theft. This frame narrative sets the tone for a story of revenge, grit, and uneasy alliances in a town where the line between justice and survival is razor-thin.
On his release from prison, McGraw learns Nimmo, Aldo Ray, has carved out control of the town—owning the sheriff, Robert Walker Jr, and Billie, Barbara Werle, the sheriff’s sister who is Nimmo’s woman. The law is a tool in Nimmo’s hand, and the people seem to accept the new order as fate, while a few restless souls nurse quiet grievances and look for a chance to strike a blow.
Inside Nimmo’s circle is Kid Dandy, Sammy Davis Jr, a quick-draw gunslinger who plays billiards and helps keep Nimmo safe from harm. Dandy’s presence adds a volatile confidence to Nimmo’s regime, a risky balance of charm and menace that colors every move in this dusty world.
From the hills, Jud McGraw watches Nimmo’s drunken parties, including the brutal assault on Little Moon, Stefanie Powers, a Native American woman who speaks only Spanish. He sees a community torn apart by fear and abuse, and a spark of resolve begins to kindle as he witnesses the cruelty inflicted on someone who cannot easily defend herself.
Later, McGraw comes across Little Moon bathing in a spring, and the two set off together as he begins to hatch a plan to strike the town and dismantle Nimmo’s grip. Little Moon does much of the labor and struggles to draw McGraw into a partnership, her quiet strength slowly drawing him away from the shadows of his past.
They kill many of Nimmo’s men and ride back toward the town for the climactic move, ready to break Nimmo’s hold once and for all. McGraw almost dies while trying to steal dynamite from Nimmo’s shack, but Little Moon saves him, proving that their alliance—born from shared peril and hard-won trust—could be the beginning of a reckoning.
In the end, the tale within the tale leaves audiences with a hard-won sense of possibility: two weary outsiders, united by necessity, standing against a corrupt power in a landscape where every shot exchanges power for freedom, and every choice could tip the balance between vengeance and justice.
