Young, promising violinist Joe Bonaparte, William Holden struggles to make ends meet as mounting financial pressure mounts. His father, Mr. Bonaparte senior, Lee J. Cobb hopes Joe will stay devoted to music and even buys him a fine violin for his 21st birthday. But Joe is drawn to boxing as a practical path to support himself, and he persuades almost bankrupt manager Tom Moody Adolph Menjou to give him a chance. He begins to win match after match, building confidence and a sense of purpose, while the looming possibility of hand injuries remains a constant risk.

As his success grows, his conscience grows uneasy, and Lorna Moon, Barbara Stanwyck, Moody’s companion, is sent to keep him in the ring and push him toward embracing the sport as a lucrative path. Gangster Eddie Fuseli, Joseph Calleia, arrives with his own stake in the deal and buys Moody’s share, nudging Joe toward a harder, more calculating style. The fencing between artistry and brutality becomes sharper as the pressures mount.

In the semi-final, Joe faces Chocolate Drop, James ‘Cannonball’ Green, and knocks him out in the second round. The victory is tinged with tragedy, and the consequences ripple through Joe and Lorna, altering their outlooks and loyalties. After this turning point, Joe retires from boxing and returns with Lorna to his father, seeking to honor his musical gift and reclaim the sense of purpose that first drew him to the violin.
