In a bid to reach an answer, they decide to test God in absentia, turning the inquiry inward and outward in a rare, collective quest for meaning. What follows is a careful, extended debate about the nature of evil and the presence (or absence) of divine goodness. One early idea—that human freedom of will requires permitting people to choose actions that lead to horrific outcomes—is proposed, but it is dismissed with contempt, and the discussion stubbornly persists, probing deeper than mere pieties or platitudes.

Among the group, a rabbi steps forward to inspect the historical record: the ways in which God has acted toward Israel’s enemies as told in the Hebrew Bible. From this examination, he reaches a stark, unsettling conclusion: God is not inherently good, and He has simply stood with the Jews through history. He recalls seeing the provocative phrase on the belts of the German guards and argues that, by this light, God has now turned against the Jewish people.
