God for Sale is a satirical examination of what truly shapes a person’s faith, probing how belief, power, memory, and desire intertwine in a society that loves to label and judge. The film opens with the arrest of Poornananda Swami, who is accused of child sacrifice, and then unspools the mystery through competing versions offered by the accused and his brother Baskaran, inviting the audience to weigh truth against rhetoric in a charged social landscape.

The story then travels back to the 1970s, centering on Attingal village life and the life of a tailor named Kamalasanan Pillai Suraj Venjaramoodu. After a Kadhaprasangam performance one morning, Pillai is found dead under murky circumstances, his death casting a long shadow over those who knew him and the world he inhabited. The mystery surrounding his demise begins to shape the course of the generations that follow, setting the stage for a broader meditation on faith’s grip on ordinary people.

As the narrative shifts to a more contemporary timeline, the focus moves to Prasannan Kunchacko Boban, Kamalasanan Pillai’s son, who has grown into a hardworking daily-wage labourer with a secret love in his life. The tale then pivots again to reveal him as a brilliant law student at a prestigious college, where his intellect sheds new light on the social and personal forces at play. This period marks a turning point, as Prasannan begins to confront bitter truths from his early life that begin to mold his evolving personality.

In the academic environment, Prasannan is drawn toward a right-wing milieu, shown through his attraction to the Swayam Seva Sangh, a turning point that stirs debates about loyalty, ambition, and the direction of one’s moral compass. As the pressures mount, he also experiences romance with a wealthy woman, a relationship that accelerates his ascent into affluence and privilege. Yet money and status bring their own kind of turmoil, and an emotional downturn drives him toward struggle and self-doubt, including a descent into alcoholism.

The film follows this fraught journey from the college corridors to a retreat centre, where questions about faith, power, and selfhood intensify.
