Get Real 1998

Steven Carter is a 16-year-old middle-class schoolboy who is intelligent and good-looking, but unathletic and introverted. He endures bullying at school and feels misunderstood at home, and his only confidante is his neighbour and best friend, Linda. Keeping his sexual orientation hidden from everyone else, he cruises in public toilets as a private outlet for what he’s beginning to understand about himself.

He is surprised to find the school jock, John Dixon, also cruising, but John denies that he is gay. The moment of danger and secrecy becomes tangled with a growing sense of possibility as Steven senses a connection he hadn’t expected. Later, at a school dance, Steven gains a friend after he comforts Jessica Jessica, following her argument with her boyfriend, Kevin Grainger, who is also his bully. This moment of vulnerability helps Steven feel seen by someone outside his usual circle, even as Kevin’s presence serves as a reminder of the pressure he faces from peers.

When Steven returns home, John follows him and confides about his own sexual orientation. They start a relationship, stepping into a fragile space where affection and fear coexist. Word around the school spreads about someone being gay, and John fears that Steven has been telling people. In order to preserve his social status, John beats up Steven in front of his friends, a brutal display that underscored how dangerous it could be to live openly.

Steven musters the courage to respond in a public way, and he announces in front of the school assembly that he is gay, looking to John for support. John, however, ignores him, leaving Steven exposed to both the crowd and the emotional fallout. John later apologizes for the beating and says he loves him, but his fear of coming out is too strong, and Steven, choosing happiness for himself, ends the relationship, wishing him happiness. The film leaves viewers with a quiet, unresolved undertone about love, acceptance, and the costs of living honestly in a world that still aches to understand everyone.
