Kamla, Mala Sinha is a successful stage performer who lives with her widowed father Dindayal Nazir Hussain in Delhi. She works in the company owned by Kunver Shamsher Singh Sujit Kumar, who harbors a quiet desire to marry her but cannot express his feelings. After a heavy schedule, Kamla takes a break and travels to Kulu, where a local cattle herder named Sarju Rajendra Kumar captures her ear with a soulful song. They spend time together, and Kamla becomes increasingly fascinated by him, drawn to the simplicity and sincerity he embodies.
Before she returns, Sarju finally proposes, and Kamla accepts. Yet their different backgrounds raise questions, and Kamla agrees to come and stay with him in Kulu. She returns to Delhi to finish her committed stage shows. The news hits Kunver hard, as he realizes his chance at her hand is slipping away, leaving him to wrestle with a mix of hurt and unresolved longing. He eventually speaks up, insisting that Kamla reconsider, but she calmly explains that she cannot alter her decision, even as she sympathizes with his feelings.
Some days later, Sarju arrives in Delhi with his sister Janki [Kumkum], who seeks work after her engagement broke off. Kamla introduces him to her boss Kunver, who is initially wary but, after a quick makeover, accepts Sarju as part of the troupe. The two performers—Kamla and Sarju—soon become a roaring success on stage, and their records fly off the shelves. They also help arrange Janki’s marriage to a businessman named Ashok and decide to stage two weddings at the same time, celebrating their rising fortunes together.
Fueled by jealousy, Kunver arranges an accident intended to kill Sarju. Sarju survives but is left unable to speak due to a head injury. The weddings go ahead, and Kamla cares for Sarju as his condition slowly improves, harboring the hope that she will marry him once he regains his voice. Meanwhile, Kunver schemes to snip the bond between Kamla and Sarju by destroying her father and turning Sarju into the prime suspect in the crime.
In a tense moment, Kamla sees Sarju standing with a knife near her father’s dead body, and she believes he has killed him. She sends him away to his sister’s house, but Sarju himself leaves Janki’s home. He later works as a construction laborer, where his flute playing catches the ear of a boss who invites him to perform on the radio, reviving his voice and confidence.
Kamla finally agrees to marry Kunver, but only on the condition that Sarju is not handed over to the police. Kunver continues to plot, sending goons to finish Sarju. Sarju escapes, and with the help of the authorities, Kunver is exposed as the true killer of Kamla’s father. The revelation brings Kamla and Sarju back together, and they decide to return to the mountains of Kulu, where their future can begin anew, away from the shadows of deceit and jealousy.
