Jack Ellway, a marine biologist on the island of Malau, studies how seismic activity impacts the local marine ecosystem. A series of mysterious drownings interrupts his research and casts a shadow over the beachfront research site. He soon learns that a nearby underwater trench is home to a family of giant amphibians that have muta ted after prolonged exposure to buried pesticides. As Jack and the local doctor Dr. Alyson Hart begin to scour the surrounding waters for the strange creatures, the arrival of the military signals a shift from scientific observation to urgent intervention.

Jack’s teenage son, Brandon Ellway, becomes entwined in the danger in a startling way when he meets and befriends a baby creature capable of leaving the ocean and walking on land.
