In a 17th-century Pernambuco sugarcane plantation, Antônio Pitanga as Antão is born in the cramped below decks of a slave ship that carried his mother, a captive, to the Portuguese colony of Brazil. As he grows, he learns that his mother, who has since died, had once been a queen, and that he is destined to become Ganga Zumba, the African king. The wise elder Sororoba informs him of Palmares, a free kingdom hidden in the hills, protected by the Orisha Oshosi and built by runaway slaves.

Palmares’ king, Zambi, who is at war with the whites, has just lost his son. Upon learning of Antão’s existence, he believes the boy could become Palmares’s next leader. Sorobaba and others set in motion his escape, aided by a guide sent by Zambi, and Antão flees with his lover Léa Garcia as Cipriana.

On the road, Portuguese landowners from a neighboring farm spot them, but they manage to kill most of their pursuers, leaving only the slave Luiza Maranhão as Dandara to survive the attack. When they reach the river designated for the meeting with Zambi’s warriors, they discover no one there. Yet their journey continues, and they eventually reach Palmares, where they receive a king’s welcome, even as Tolentino da Rosa, the slave hunter, keeps pressing in.
