Pédret, Aram Stephan, a Spanish immigrant, arrives in the southwest French countryside at the turn of the century. He finds work as a blacksmith and marries Augustine, Françoise Lebrun, the daughter of the village baker. Over time, his humble forge grows into a full-fledged foundry, and by 1936 it is managed by his three sons: Hector, Michel Auclair; Prosper, Claude Mann; and Pierre, Pierre Baillot. Augustine, now a bourgeois matriarch, helps shape the family’s status as the business and social life of the town crystalizes around their dynastic ambitions.

When Augustine discovers that her son Hector is having an affair with Berthe, a lowly seamstress, she sets out to ruin Berthe’s livelihood and push her out of town—calmly resorting to bribes and scheming to achieve her goal. Berthe, Jeanne Moreau, is no passive bystander, and the situation forces the elder Pédret to reckon with the gap between his sons’ rattled spirits and Berthe’s blunt, practical sense. He ultimately arranges for Berthe and Hector to be married, a move that unsettles the old social order and plants the seeds for a new dynamic within the family.
