Norman Truscott Norman Wisdom works as a dry cleaner, but dreams of a life on the stage. He enrolls in elocution and singing lessons with Dymphna Dobson Hattie Jacques, a patient yet persistent teacher who pushes him to grow, while his heart quietly flirts with Judy June Laverick, Miss Dobson’s colleague who teaches piano and shares his longing for a brighter stage future.

One night, Norman goes to the theatre to watch the dazzling Vernon Carew Jerry Desmonde perform, and in a burst of bold if ill‑timed enthusiasm, he tries to join in. To Carew’s surprise, Norman’s untrained voice carries a genuine spark that outshines the aging star’s fading tempo and crowd appeal. Seizing the moment, Carew uses a calculated pretext of offering Norman singing lessons, secretly recording Norman singing in the bath, and then passes the performance off as his own—lip-synching to the bath‑recording on television. The trick works, reviving Carew’s career and putting him back in the spotlight as a star once more.

Miss Dobson catches the deceit when she sneaks backstage during Carew’s show and witnesses the playback of Norman’s voice being mimed. The truth comes crashing down in front of everyone, and the revelation stirs chaos both onstage and behind the scenes. Faced with the fallout, Norman is encouraged to step forward and sing live, and the audience responds with warm, enthusiastic applause.
