Set during the waning months of World War II, this quietly powerful drama follows Lawrence Newman, a mild-mannered Gentile who works as a personnel manager and lives with his mother in Brooklyn. The community around him is frayed by fear and prejudice, as his friendly next-door neighbor Fred belongs to the antisemitic Union Crusaders, a group that places blame on Jews for the war, and the arrival of a Jewish storekeeper named Finkelstein adds to the tense atmosphere. In the midst of this climate, a gentile woman named Gertrude Hart arrives at Lawrence’s workplace to apply for a job, and Lawrence’s vengeful suspicion about her religion quickly reveals how easily bigotry can take hold.
