On Halloween, a group of kids hitch a hayride through the countryside and hire a local farmer to take them to a secluded patch of woods, promising to return after dark. The scene feels quiet and rural, the air a little spooked, and the mood shifts as the party settles into a nighttime ritual of drinks and whispers. The farmer Ned, Rik Billock, leads the voyage into the trees, but the night holds a far darker secret than anyone expects.

Hidden beneath a fallen tree stump, the farmer uncovers a large wooden box bearing an ancient seal that warns not to break it. In a rash moment, he breaks the seal and releases the FleshEater, S. William Hinzman, a predatory force that wastes no time in turning the farmer into a zombie. The two undead figures trudge toward the scattered group, their approach slow and inexorable, rippling with dread as the party’s carefree Halloween mood collapses into panic.

Inside the barn, two of the kids who came for a private moment become casualties of the rampage. The FleshEater terrorizes the space, and when two friends outside stumble upon the carnage, they sprint to alert the rest. The survivors rush to warn the crowd, but their pleas are cut short as the bitten girl bleeds out and rises again, transforming into another flesh-craving foe. The attack erupts anew as the remaining party-goers scramble to barricade doors and windows, seeking refuge in the old and creaking structures nearby.

The group at Spencer’s Farm, an old, disused farmhouse tucked into the woods, becomes a fragile sanctuary. They nail up the farmhouse’s defenses and attempt to call for help, but the line is tragically severed when a zombie rends the telephone wires outside. Meanwhile, the two escapees dive into the safety of a basement, locking the door behind them as the world outside succumbs to the undead. Above, the bitten girl dies and reanimates, and the zombies outside force their way in, slaughtering the scattered survivors and pulling them into the growing herd of the living dead.

A police car finally arrives in response to the broken call, but the officer is overwhelmed by the rising tide of the undead and is left for dead. The kids in the basement seize the officer’s gun and flee into the night, joining a desperate exodus through the dark woods. As the night wears on, zombies drift into a nearby residential street, feeding on a local family and turning them into more of the rotting horde. A stable owner nearby tries to defend his home; inside, his wife becomes a zombie, and the onslaught drives him to fight for his life before he, too, is consumed. The kids push onward, the danger never far behind.

Their path leads them to a large barn hosting a Halloween party, where the living celebrate while the dead close in. The two hidden kids crouch within the barn’s framework, listening to the chaos unfold as the zombies descend and slaughter the revelers. The soundscape becomes a tense chorus of screams, gunfire, and the snapping of wood as the structure becomes a tomb for the partygoers.

As daylight breaks, a posse of police and volunteers arrives, advancing through the woods with rifles raised and resolve hardening. They shoot the emerging corpses and, with the barn in sight, think they have contained the outbreak. The two hidden kids, stepping out of their improvised shelter, believe they have survived, only to be cut down by a sniper, a grim reminder of the world’s brutal logic. The bodies are dragged inside and burned to prevent further spread, the inferno casting long shadows across the shattered farmland.

Yet the nightmare isn’t over. In a final, chilling coda, the FleshEater resurfaces among the wreckage, killing a police officer and reigniting the outbreak as the ash settles and the dawn light spills across the field. What began as a Halloween excursion among friends ends as a grim cycle of hunger and horror that restarts with the first flicker of life in the shadows, leaving a haunting reminder that some boxes, once opened, cannot be closed again.
