After the Korean War, Tony and Felix run a modest tramp boat, the Ruby, using it for small-scale smuggling around the Caribbean, with a loyal third crewman, Jimmy Jean. Their bartender contact, Miguel, introduces them to an American businessman who has been enjoying the company of Irena, a passport-less European muse. He hopes to get her to another island, and though the crew are wary, the promise of $1,200 proves hard to resist.
On the voyage, Tony begins to fall for her. Knowing the kind of woman she is, Felix does his best to protect his partner by warning Irena to stay away from Tony. Yet the tides of affection turn, and Felix finds himself drawn to her as well. When Irena disembarks, Tony decides to go with her, effectively ending his partnership with Felix.
A few drinks loosen the mood, and Tony visits a drunk Felix to propose one last job together. Felix declines, feeling hurt by his friend’s abandonment and warning that Irena may drift away from him too. Jimmy Jean brushes off the personal heat, but the tension simmers beneath the surface.
Tony and Jimmy Jean take on a shady assignment, only to be intercepted by the authorities. They must abandon ship and swim to a nearby island to dodge arrest. Tony then takes a job aboard a cargo vessel to return to Irena, all the while nursing the plan to remove Felix from the picture, convinced that his former partner tipped off the customs to reduce competition for Irena.
Meanwhile, Irena’s feelings complicate the web of loyalties: she travels to Felix and confesses that she loves him, not Tony. A collision soon tests every bond aboard the damaged vessel, leaving Tony trapped below deck under a girder as the ship burns and dangerous cargo threatens a catastrophic explosion. Doctor Sam Blake offers the only possible escape by amputating Tony’s trapped legs, but Tony would rather die. Felix climbs aboard to stay by his friend’s side, and a final act of courage frees Tony, with Felix carrying him to safety.
Recovery follows, and the two men confront the tangled truth in a seaside bar, where Tony finally understands that Irena’s true love lies with Felix. He steps back, choosing to walk away and acknowledge the loss with a measured, quiet wisdom.
