What Is Fig Trees About?
The premise of Fig Trees without spoilers.
A documentary opera follows AIDS activists Tim McCaskell in Toronto and Zackie Achmat in Cape Town as they battle for access to treatment drugs. Real interviews, speeches, press conferences and protests are de‑constructed and set as operatic scenes. A surreal fictional thread imagines Gertrude Stein kidnapping the duo, transporting them to Niagara Falls to perform avant‑garde vocal compositions, but abandoning the tragedy when Zackie resumes his medication.
