Eve Stephens, Tilda Swinton, a top Los Angeles trial attorney, stands on the brink of a judgeship, yet her private life remains unsettled. Beneath her poised exterior lies self-doubt and a constant pressure to conform to society’s expectations of a successful woman. She is haunted by erotic nightmares and flashes of her parents’ lives—her distant, unfeeling father and the troubling death of her mother, Beth. Her intimate life flickers in bursts of passion—first with a male geologist, Clancy Brown John, and later with a female psychiatrist, Karen Sillas Renee—yet these relationships never offer warmth or lasting commitment. She also feels the sting of professional and personal rivalry from Langley Flynn, Paulina Porizkova Langley Flynn, a younger woman seen as a potential replacement in the attorney ranks.

Her professional and personal balance begins to unravel when her intelligent sister, Amy Madigan Madelyn Stephens, a doctoral student, is arrested for shoplifting. Eve bails her out, but Maddie follows by stealing the “lucky suit” Eve had planned to wear to the Governor’s interview to secure her appointment. During the interview, Eve’s anger toward Maddie surfaces in a blunt moment when she tells the Governor that she has no time for family. Fearing that this admission could cost her the chance at a judgeship, she flies into a rage. As the sisters confront the influence of their parents, they recognize the maladaptive patterns they’ve absorbed—one seeking compensation through theft, the other through sex—and begin to question the paths they’ve chosen.

In the end, the Governor approves Eve’s appointment, a resolution that brings a cautious sense of vindication but also leaves lingering tensions in her personal life. Later, Eve comes to the aid of Maddie’s neighbor Edwina, known as “Ed,” a tomboyish 13‑year‑old who uses self‑harm to cope with the turmoil of puberty. Dale Shuger Edwina is placed in Eve’s care as she rushes to the edge of a cliff and pulls Ed back from attempting to leap. The final image lingers on Ed’s face pressed into Eve’s lap, a quiet, intimate moment that underscores the film’s focus on healing, responsibility, and the difficult chords of family and memory.
