Three best friends and recent graduates—Farah Nikohl Boosheri, Roopa Kiran Deol, and K.J. Kandis Fay—set off on a cross-country campaign across America in 2004 to canvas for John Kerry. What starts as a straightforward political road trip quickly evolves into a longer journey that blends activism with personal revelation as they travel from Los Angeles toward Ohio, deciding to keep campaigning along the way and to talk to people they meet about the power of their vote.

Farah, the only one of the trio who remains a virgin, faces a pressure from her friends to step into dating and sexuality on the trip. Roopa and K.J. push her to share their own stories about losing their virginities, turning the car conversations into lessons and debates about desire, risk, and agency. After K.J. reveals that she bled the first time she had sex, Farah makes a drastic choice to alter her own body in a moment of urgency: she penetrates herself with a toy gun in order to rupture her hymen so that she won’t bleed when she eventually chooses to have sex. The decision is presented with a quiet intensity, reflecting the trio’s push-pull between self-ownership and social expectations.

Arriving in Ohio, the friends shift their focus to voter engagement, trying to register voters while balancing the stresses of long hours on the road. The trip takes on a broader political texture as they watch Barack Obama’s keynote address at the 2004 Democratic National Convention on a television, and alongside other Ohio canvassers they talk about the enduring desire to spark real change in the country.

Election day brings a mix of nerves and camaraderie. The friends spend time at a bar, waiting for results, and the night grows intimate in small moments: while K.J. and Roopa set off some fireworks together, Farah steps away with a handsome stranger she meets—a veteran of the War in Afghanistan. The encounter leads to a night they share, and she returns to her friends with a new sense of courage. They greet her news with warmth, and together they light one final firework, marking a bittersweet moment of achievement and possibility.

As dawn breaks, Kerry’s concession speech fills the room, and the mood shifts from hopeful expectation to tempered realism. The three women wake with heavy hearts, driving toward a quiet lakeside where they confront the sobering truth: Kerry’s campaign, and the political moment it represented, did not deliver the sweeping change they had hoped for.
