Evelyn Quan Wang is a middle-aged Chinese immigrant who runs a laundromat with her husband, Waymond. They eloped to the United States years earlier, and they have a daughter named Joy who now wrestles with her own burdens. In the present, Evelyn is pulled in multiple directions at once: the IRS is auditing the laundromat, Waymond is trying to hand her divorce papers to spark a real talk about their fractured marriage, her demanding father—Gong Gong, the family’s elder—drops in for a Chinese New Year celebration, and Joy’s happiness is tangled with her depression and her relationship with Becky, a girlfriend Evelyn struggles to accept.

At a tense meeting with IRS Revenue Agent Deirdre Beaubeirdre, Waymond’s body is suddenly taken over by Alpha-Waymond, a version of Waymond from the Alphaverse. He reveals that countless parallel universes exist because every choice creates a new path. In that Alphaverse, a now-deceased Evelyn discovered a way to access the skills, memories, and bodies of her other selves through verse-jumping—an ability that becomes a survival tool against a threat that spans the multiverse. The danger comes from Jobu Tupaki, the Alpha-Joy whose mind shattered after being driven to verse-jump beyond endurance. Jobu has created the Everything Bagel, a black-hole-like toroid that could unravel the entire multiverse.

Armed with verse-jumping tech, Evelyn enters the fray as minions of Jobu converge on the IRS building. She witnesses alternate versions of herself who achieved different lives—she could have become a kung fu master or a film star, for instance—and she also learns that Waymond intends to file for divorce, a revelation that challenges her sense of purpose. Alpha-Waymond believes that Evelyn, despite being labeled the “greatest failure” among her many selves, actually holds the untapped power needed to stop Jobu. Gong Gong is briefly taken over by Alpha-Gong Gong, who instructs Evelyn to kill Joy to avert Jobu’s use of Joy to access Evelyn’s universe. Evelyn refuses, choosing instead to confront Jobu by growing her powers through continued verse-jumping.

The confrontation escalates as Alpha-Gong Gong suspects Evelyn has been compromised, sending soldiers after her. In the Alphaverse, Jobu kills Alpha-Waymond, intensifying the danger Evelyn faces. When Jobu corners Evelyn in her own universe, Evelyn’s mind begins to fracture under the pressure of the many selves she calls upon. The two end up verse-jumping through wildly varied and often bizarre worlds, until Jobu reveals her true aim: she does not want a fight, but to find an Evelyn who can see what she sees—that nothing truly matters.

They are brought to the edge of oblivion at the Everything Bagel, where Jobu intends to use the Bagel to die and, somehow, to force both of them into true nothingness. Looking into the Bagel, Evelyn is offered a nihilistic path, and she acts briefly in cruel, self-centered ways across some of the universes. Yet a moment of clarity cuts through the despair when she hears Waymond’s plea in her own universe: to choose kindness and strive for happiness even when life seems meaningless. That ethical pivot becomes Evelyn’s awakening.

With this existential pivot, Evelyn chooses empathy as her strongest weapon. She uses her multiverse powers to fight through the assault and to heal rather than destroy, neutralizing Alpha-Gong Gong’s fighters and restoring balance. Back in her home universe, she reconciles with Waymond, accepts Joy’s relationship with Becky, and even tells Gong Gong about it, while Waymond convinces Deirdre to let them redo their taxes. Jobu, too, is drawn back from the brink and decides to enter the Bagel alone; in the same moment, Joy pleads with Evelyn to let her go. Evelyn reassures Joy that, even if she could be anywhere in the multiverse, she will always choose to be with her.

The two women repair their bond, and the family’s ties begin to strengthen. Evelyn and Joy embrace as the family’s relationships grow warmer, and they save Jobu from the Bagel’s pull. Afterward, they return to the IRS building to refile their taxes, and Evelyn’s attention briefly shifts to her alternative selves before she grounds herself again in the life she shares with her family.

In the end, the film turns a crisis of meaning into a testament to connection, kindness, and perseverance. The family steps forward together, carrying the hope that even in a universe of infinite possibilities, love and empathy can guide every choice. The story leaves them back in their own world, refreshed and more secure in their bonds, ready to meet whatever comes next with a gentler, more compassionate outlook.
