Leonard Borland is a New York City wrecking contractor whose life seems mapped between his unglamorous work and a glamorous ambition for his wife, Doris, an aspiring opera singer who struggles to find real talent. He bankrolls her recital with a careful, steady hand—about $3,000—hoping to lift her from obscurity even as he keeps his own desires for stability close to the vest. Doris, living in a world of social soirèes and stage rehearsals, trains with her mother and a vocal coach, ironically letting the spotlight stay just out of reach for her.

In the flux of show business, fate brings Cecil Carver, a celebrated opera star, into Leonard’s orbit. Cecil complains there are no suitable baritones for her latest production, and a chance encounter at a failed attempt to lure a critic to Doris’s recital becomes a crossroads. After Cecil attends the recital and contacts him, the two meet again at her apartment, where they discover an unexpected resonance. Back in New York, Doris endures a frightening shock treatment after a disastrous booking at a movie palace. She contemplates giving up her dreams, but she agrees to attend a celebrity cocktail party themed around showcasing talent. There, Doris senses a growing rift as Cecil’s presence unsettles her husband, and she begins to fear that Leonard might be more involved with Cecil than she realized. The revelation lands with a jolt when the party audience suddenly discovers that Leonard possesses a remarkable voice, and the crowd presses him to perform, exposing a secret that shatters Doris’s confidence in their marriage.

Battered by betrayal and humiliation, Doris makes the painful decision to cast Leonard out. He sinks into penniless anonymity, checking into a hotel while Doris herself moves to Palm Beach. Yet financial necessity pushes him toward a steady opera job, a lifeline that promises both income and the return to the stage. The debut becomes a public ordeal: on cue, Leonard’s nerves seize him as Cecil and her assistant provide him pills and a troubling potion. He grows sick, misses his entrance, and plunges into disaster, wrecking the production before a mortified audience. The fall is dramatic—literally—landing him in the orchestra pit, and Cecil condemns him to leave the stage.

Behind the scenes, Doris’s own humanity surfaces. She feels for her estranged husband, crosses the room to the wings, and seeks to mend their frayed bond. When they finally return home together, a glimmer of possibility appears: Leonard has been offered a lucrative wrecking contract in Texas.
