In a future governed by a tightly controlled, technologically driven regime, the film unfolds on a dated May 14, 2187 and leans into the tension between personal longing and an all-seeing state. In a world where daily life is tracked and regulated, YYO 7117 is questioned about her feelings for her mate THX 1138, described as a sexually conceived eros body. Through clipped radio messages, computer operators monitor THX 1138 as he is spotted sprinting through a corridor, illustrating how intimate life is surveilled and managed.

When confronted, THX 1138 refuses a direct order to stop and escapes toward the lower levels, triggering a response from the operators who unleash a painful mind-block. The struggle between control and autonomy intensifies as the mind-block proves difficult to maintain, and THX 1138 seems to resist its effects long enough to keep moving. The pursuit is intensified by an enhanced perfect body drawn into the chase, its presence a stark reminder of the regime’s relentless push to suppress individuality and desire.

The chase leads through the labyrinthine lower levels, where the couple finally faces the oppressive proxy of the system. They confront and kill the perfect body, a moment that shocks the operators and signals a crack in the machinery of surveillance. THX 1138 reaches a door, pries it open, and escapes the structure, breaking free from the claustrophobic grip of the installation. As THX 1138 runs into the countryside toward the setting sun, the government feeds YYO 7117 a lie—that THX has “destroyed themself”—and offers instructions on how to request a new mate, revealing the cold mechanism by which the state maintains control over reproduction and companionship.
