Nineteen-year-old Joe Spring has his driver’s license reinstated after a suspension for reckless driving. Almost immediately, he pleads with his parents, Teresa Spring and Tim Spring, to let him drive from their home in Aldergrove, BC to Quesnel, BC for a Saturday night party. They reluctantly give in. Joe plans to leave Friday after work, drive through the night, and call as soon as he reaches the destination the next morning. That promised call never comes.
In the middle of the night on Saturday, a partygoer phones in to say Joe didn’t show up, but the caller is too high to share details. Joe doesn’t answer his mother’s repeated attempts to reach him, and his girlfriend Patti soon arrives with the news that Joe left early to spend the night with her. Patti admits she threw him out and even broke his phone when she discovered he was sexting with a girl named Lucinda Klunn. With the police unable to help immediately, Teresa begins her own investigation, largely without Tim’s support, as he remains detached, haunted by unemployment and a retreat from daily life.
Teresa, with the help of their teenage daughter Becca Spring, pieces together clues from Joe’s digital traces. They learn of Lucinda’s existence and travel to Chasm, where Lucinda denies knowing Joe. Unmoved, Teresa turns to the Hope RCMP detachment, which suggests missing person posters but explains they cannot actively pursue the case until Joe has been missing for 48 hours. A breakthrough comes when a young Indian boy, the child Joe once gave a ride to, recognizes Joe from the poster as the person who had given him a lift home on Saturday morning. The trail widens as investigators connect Joe to several people he spoke with before vanishing.
As the investigation expands, officers learn that Joe had assisted in moving marijuana for a grow-op, which pulls the story toward Weaver, Lucinda’s casual boyfriend and a key player in the drugs operation. Joe’s credit card records become another critical thread for the authorities and the family, narrowing down possible locations of a crash. A search-and-rescue team is deployed near Chasm but initially fails to locate Joe or his car. Later, a man Joe had helped change a tire recognizes Joe from the televised posters, reinforcing that the search has been misdirected and must shift toward a different area.
The team shifts its efforts to the area just outside Hope, where the trail suggests Joe may have fallen asleep at the wheel after aiding the tire changer. Sergeant Al Ramey explains that the search has reached its eighth day and has been downgraded from a rescue to a recovery, with the helicopter presence reduced and ground crews scaled back. Despite orders, Joe’s mother makes a final plea to the helicopter pilot, Jodeen Cassidy, to search one more time. Initially reluctant, the pilot agrees, driven by sympathy and the seriousness of the situation.
During a high-stakes last effort, the helicopter locates a vehicle that matches Joe’s car. They land, and Teresa exits with a rising mix of fear and hope. Joe is found in a bloody, battered state, and the EMS team is called to the scene. The moment is chaotic but hopeful, as Joe fights to stay with them. The recovery process begins, and while he sustains serious injuries, Joe survives and gradually begins to recover, underscoring a night of fear that slowly yields to the possibility of a second chance.
