Set in the shadowy alleys of a harsh city, the film follows a destitute beggar and his talented performing dog, Flip. After a gig at a wealthy child’s birthday, the man spurns a $500 offer to sell the dog and returns to the streets. Poverty forces him to sell Flip for $20, after which he is beaten and robbed. Grieving the loss, he envisions reuniting with Flip in heaven, where they perform together for God.

Mr. Valentine, a suave panhandler Hugo Haas, moves through the city with a wide circle of friends and a remarkable companion, a performing dog named Flip. When Helen Baxter, June Shelley, a tenant whose boyfriend works as a chauffeur for a wealthy man, suggests that Valentine and Flip perform at the birthday party of the millionaire’s spoiled son, the idea takes flight. The show delights the children and the grown-ups alike, and Valentine and the millionaire grow friendly—the former is rewarded with money, drinks, and a large leftover dinner and cake, plus several bottles of spirits.
