Bob is a socially inept middle-aged film critic from the Netherlands who lives for cinema but struggles with real-world social cues, especially when it comes to asking someone out. He is deeply infatuated with a woman Sylvia Hoeks who works at the popcorn counter of his favorite cinema, and while she sometimes flirts, his nerves keep him from turning that spark into action.
Determined to change his luck, he decides he needs to be more bold, to lure her back to his apartment and finally bridge the gap between movie-love and real-life romance. Just as his courage begins to crest, an unexpected guest arrives and throws his plans into disarray. Duska is a more geeky movie buff that Bob met at a film festival in Russia, and he’s decided to take up Bob’s offer to stay at his flat if he’s ever in town.
Duska’s presence crams Bob’s carefully crafted new vibe, and the bigger problem soon becomes clear: the guest seems determined to make a long-term visit. Bob finds himself unsure how to navigate this unwelcome extension without hurting his own chances at romance or disrupting the quiet life he’s trying to reimagine. The situation sets the stage for a comedy-drama that relies on the clash between two devoted cinephiles and the messy reality of shared living space.
As the narrative unfolds, the characters’ mutual love for films becomes a lens through which awkwardness, generosity, and the gaps between fantasy and everyday life are explored. The story stays grounded in a believable emotional core, balancing humor with genuine moments of vulnerability. The tension between ambition and embarrassment, between hospitality and boundary-setting, drives both the humor and the pathos, making the film a thoughtful meditation on loneliness, friendship, and the often comic pursuit of connection.
