In the era before Alba Longa and Rome are united, Horatius leads Roman troops against the Alba forces along their fragile border, a landscape where courage is tested and pride presses against duty. He is wounded in battle, captured, and taken as a prisoner, only to escape into the rugged hills where he hides to heal and rethink his place in a world that keeps shifting around him.

Seeking a lasting peace, King Gaius Cluilius of Alba joins the Roman king in a stark, ancient calculus: to decide which side will prevail, three brothers from each realm must fight to the death, with the victors earning the right to oversee the eventual unification of the two kingdoms. This grim contest is framed by a sense of fate and oracle’s whispers, a brutal ritual meant to settle years of tension with one decisive, blood-stained day.

Horatius makes his reluctant return to Rome, only to find that his name has been dishonored and that Marcia is already wed to Marcus, Horatius’s ally-turned-rival in this precarious diplomacy. The sting of humiliation drives him back to the hills, where he girds himself with thought as much as steel, awaiting the moment when the oracle’s prophecy might unfold into reality.

The day of the contest arrives. Horatius reappears with his two brothers in a bid to secure peace through battle, but tragedy strikes early—the brothers fall. Yet Horatius presses on, fighting alone against the Alban contenders and vanquishing the three brothers, among them Curazio, the lover of Horatia. The revelation of Curazio’s connection to Horatia adds a raw sting to the victory, and Horatia, overwhelmed by grief, takes her own life.

With the Alban threat neutralized, Horatius is finally free to pursue his heart’s desire and the chance to marry Marcia, sealing a path toward a future where unity between Alba and Rome might finally be within reach. The tale closes on a note of quiet resolve, the price of glory paid in blood, and the fragile hope that peace, though hard-won, could one day endure.
