Dominick and Eugene 1988

Dominick Luciano (Tom Hulce), known as “Nicky,” and Eugene Luciano (Ray Liotta), known as “Gino,” are fraternal twins whose lives are defined by family duty and a fragile memory. Nicky has a mental disability, and Gino, a medical student, carries the weight of caring for him while navigating a tempting offer to study at Stanford University Medical School. Gino fears that if he leaves, Nicky may struggle to cope on his own, creating a delicate balance between ambition and devotion.

Nicky works as a trash collector for Mr. Johnson, played by Bill Cobbs. His routine is steady and dependable, yet it hides the emotional strain of watching his brother’s world tilt toward crisis. Gino tries to hold together his dream of medical school with the real obligation to protect Nicky, his patient and protective twin, even as the distance between their paths grows wider.

The turning point arrives when Nicky witnesses a brutal act: Martin Chernak (David Strathairn) shoves his son Mikey (Tommy Snelsire) down a flight of stairs. At the hospital, Martin claims Mikey “fell” and warns Nicky to stay quiet. In a desperate bid to safeguard Joey, Mikey’s baby brother, Nicky retrieves a gun from Mr. Johnson’s truck and confronts the danger at Martin’s house, grabbing Joey at gunpoint. He believes he is protecting the infant, yet the tense scene triggers a citywide manhunt, and Nicky is cornered in an empty building by a SWAT team.

Gino arrives with Theresa Chernak (Mary-Joan Negro) and others, racing toward the climactic confrontation. Inside, Gino faces Nicky, and the long-buried memories of their father’s abuse come rushing back for Nicky — memories that reveal a hidden truth: Nicky had been shielding Gino all along, taking the blows meant for his brother. In a powerful moment, Gino concedes that Nicky’s memory was true, and Nicky comforts him, insisting that he is not like their father and that his love for Gino remains unwavering. The stand-off begins to ease as the police de-escalate; they return Joey to Theresa, and Nicky tells the officers that Martin killed Mikey, ensuring justice will follow.

In the aftermath, Martin is arrested, Gino heads off to Stanford, and Nicky gains a clearer sense of his own abilities. No longer defined solely by his limitations, he discovers a form of strength born from loyalty, sacrifice, and an unbreakable family bond that helps him reinterpret his role within the Chernak clan.
