Frank Bigelow, John Doe, a private detective, arrives at the St. Augustine police station one night to report what he believes is his own murder. Stanley warns him to leave town, a demand Bigelow refuses. The encounter escalates, and Stanley hands him over to Whitey and Chester to confront Majak. Majak, a menacing presence, explains that the poisoning is tied to a deal gone wrong; someone who stole the iridium poisoned Bigelow, and if Bigelow can locate the iridium, Majak promises to deal with the killer himself. Bigelow is drawn deeper into the conspiracy, and a reluctant alliance with Grace’s quiet presence reminds him that some truths are worth fighting for, even as the danger mounts.

The next morning, Bigelow faces Catherine again and threatens to go to the police. Catherine reveals that her story was a ruse designed to mislead Majak, but the truth soon emerges: she and Stanley Phillips have collaborated with a man named Lockwood, who is the real mastermind behind the theft of the iridium. When Bigelow returns to his motel, a new twist arrives as Mrs. Phillips, [Anne Gaybis], is revealed to be preparing to depart—an important thread in a plot that grows increasingly tangled. After a perilous confrontation, Bigelow heads to the Phillips’ office and encounters a grim scene: Gene Phillips is dead. He chases Lockwood, who escapes, and returns only to find Stanley Phillips dead as well. Whitey and Chester seem to be closing in on Lockwood, and the trio drag him before Majak, hoping justice will arrive.

With no iridium in hand, Majak orders Chester and Whitey to kill Bigelow and feed him to the alligators, a brutal reminder of the violence that threads through every action in this case. At the alligator farm, Chester tortures Bigelow, but Whitey hesitates, and a struggle erupts. Bigelow seizes a gun hidden in his car and shoots Chester, turning the odds back in his favor. Whitey reveals that Mrs. Phillips intends to leave from the local airport, a clue that sets the stage for a final confrontation. Close to death, Bigelow races to the airport and confronts Catherine, who admits she was hired as a test subject to verify that the iridium was legitimate. Haskell, Catherine’s partner, arrives with the iridium and confesses to poisoning Bigelow, but a sudden shot from an unseen source interrupts his account, and he collapses. Rita emerges from behind the plane; she and Mrs. Phillips reveal themselves as partners, and they depart with the iridium for Cuba, leaving Bigelow to face the consequences of the plot alone.

In a final bittersweet encounter, Bigelow meets Grace outside a church to say goodbye, a moment heavy with both relief and resignation. He then returns to the police station to tell his story, only to learn that the case is beyond any straightforward remedy: the women who orchestrated the conspiracy have vanished, and Majak remains untouchable. With the weight of the truth bearing down, Bigelow accepts his fate and dies in his chair, a private detective who gave everything to uncover a murder that wasn’t his alone to tell.
