In 1982, a colossal alien vessel appears above Johannesburg, casting a strange shadow over a city already grappling with separation and fear. Inside the ship, a vast population of malnourished insect-like aliens is discovered, and the government responds by relocating them to a crowded camp named District 9. Over the years, District 9 becomes a makeshift slum, and the local population comes to see the aliens—derogatorily labeled as “Prawns”—as dirty, dangerous, and drainful of human resources.
As tensions flare between the aliens and the residents, the government enlists Multinational United (MNU), a major defense contractor, to oversee a relocation to a new site beyond the city. An MNU official, Piet Smit, assigns his son-in-law, a bureaucrat named Wikus van de Merwe, to lead the operation. Parallel to this, three aliens—Christopher Johnson, his young son CJ, and their ally Paul—scavenge a District 9 garbage dump for technology, hoping to extract fuel from it. They build up a substantial cache, hidden away in Paul’s shack, just as the relocation process begins. When Wikus serves Paul a notice, he stumbles upon the concealed container and, accidentally, sprays some of the alien fuel onto himself. The encounter proves fatal for Paul when Koobus Venter, a ruthless MNU mercenary, kills him.
Wikus’ body begins to change, starting with a grievous injury to his arm, and he is dragged into an underground MNU lab. There, scientists learn that his hybrid DNA grants him access to Prawn weaponry—a talent humans are not supposed to possess. Recognizing a profitable opportunity, Smit orders Wikus’ body to be harvested for genetic material. Wikus fights back, escapes the lab, and becomes a hunted man as Venter’s teams close in. A staged news report proclaims Wikus to be a dangerous fugitive who has contracted a mysterious disease through alien contact.
Seeking safety, Wikus retreats to District 9 and confronts the hidden command module of the dropship buried beneath Paul’s shack. Christopher explains that the recovered fuel can reactivate the dropship so that the mothership can regain contact with Earth. This would allow Christopher to reunite with his people—and, crucially, cure Wikus using the ship’s onboard equipment. Encouraged by a phone call from his wife, Wikus steals powerful alien weapons from Obesandjo, a Nigerian crime lord who believes that consuming part of Wikus’ arm could grant him alien powers.
With new weaponry, Wikus and Christopher launch a bold assault on MNU and reach the underground lab, where Christopher witnesses the brutal experiments inflicted on his own people. The sight shifts Christopher’s priorities: his goal becomes moving his people off the planet, a plan that will require more time and testing, even if it delays Wikus’ cure. Frustrated and enraged, Wikus incapacitates Christopher momentarily and attempts to pilot the dropship toward the mothership, but Venter’s forces shoot it down. Wikus is captured along with Christopher, but an ambush by Obesandjo’s gang frees them—and abducts Wikus once more.
CJ, who remains hidden in the dropship, remotely activates the mothership and triggers a colossal, war-ready alien suit to appear in Obesandjo’s base. The suit annihilates the mercenaries, and Wikus climbs inside to rescue Christopher. The two fight their way toward the dropship while taking heavy fire, with Wikus choosing to stay behind and hold the line to give Christopher a chance to escape. Christopher promises to return in three years to cure Wikus. After all the other mercenaries are slain, Venter cripples the suit, but a new wave of Prawns eliminates Venter before he can finalize Wikus.
With the way clear, Christopher and CJ reach the mothership and lift the dropship back toward the larger craft, using a tractor beam to pull it from Earth. The mothership finally departs, leaving Earth behind as Wikus vanishes into the alien world. The truth about MNU’s experiments is exposed to the public, and the remaining aliens are moved to a new camp, District 10. Back home, Wikus’ wife Tania discovers a handcrafted metal flower on her doorstep, a fragile hint that her husband might still be alive. In the aftermath, Wikus—now fully transformed into a Prawn—appears in a junkyard, crafting more flowers for his wife, a poignant symbol of unyielding love in a world that has changed beyond recognition.
