Set on a gray housing estate in Plzeň, Jirka Horáček, a chimney sweep apprentice, shares a modest life with his widowed father. He spends his free time with his friend Roman, roaming the discotheques where neon lights pulse and chances for romance feel close at hand. One night he meets two very different figures: Eva, a striking blonde, and a quiet hairdresser named Jitka. Jirka falls for Eva, even though she already has a boyfriend, the somewhat older Cáfa. In a bold, misguided bid to win Eva over, he undertakes a string of reckless gestures: he runs around the town square naked, he kisses Eva in front of a security camera, and he invites Cáfa to a luxury restaurant, then sneaks away with Eva before the bill is settled.

Eva discovers that Jirka lied about being an airplane mechanic, and the illusion of their romance dissolves. Distraught, Jirka has his head shaved by Jitka, a moment that marks a turning point in his pride and his troubles. Cáfa also beats up Jirka after he fails to pay the restaurant bill. He then runs away from home, living as a vagrant while secretly slipping back into the house for food, a tense pattern that underscores his loneliness. Eventually, his father finds him and they reconcile, choosing to repair their bond. In the end, he comes to realize that it is Jitka’s quiet affection—not Eva’s fleeting interest—that truly understands and cares for him.
