Dipu Number 2 1996

Dipu, Arun Saha, a boy of about twelve, moves with his father, Bulbul Ahmed, a government officer, to a picturesque town after his dad’s transferable posting. Dipu quickly warms to the new town and his fresh school, making a bunch of friends and, on the very first day, clashing with the school bully Tarique, Shubashish. Tarique can’t intimidate Dipu, so he uses a string of tricks and even lands a blow. Dipu doesn’t complain to anyone; instead, he quietly considers how he might one day stand up to Tarique himself. On the horizon of this friction stands a small, pivotal moment: an adventure atop a high water tank that begins to soften Dipu’s harsh view of Tarique.

Then a shattering twist arrives. Dipu learns that his mother, Bobita, whom he believed to be dead, actually left for the United States during his childhood and has returned briefly to meet him. Dipu travels to Dhaka to see her, and their brief reunion alters his entire worldview. After this reunion, he goes back to Tarique’s place, where he uncovers another side of Tarique’s life. Dipu discovers that Tarique’s mother, Dolly Johur, is demented. DIPU also shares the truth about his own mother with Tarique, and this honest exchange draws them closer than ever.

The bond between the two boys deepens when Tarique confides a guarded secret of his own: a cavern hidden away that houses many antique sculptures. Dipu brings this discovery to his classmates, and one night, he and Tarique, along with a group of other boys, set out for a nocturnal quest to the cavern. To their astonishment, they stumble upon a gang of smugglers who deal in antiques. Relying on courage and wit, they manage to corner and capture the criminals, earning recognition for their brave actions.

Yet life moves on. Dipu’s father’s term in the town ends, and the family must relocate, leaving Dipu with a treasure trove of memories to cherish. The experience—friendships formed, secrets shared, dangers faced, and a new understanding of the wider world—lingers as a bright highlight in his twelve-year-old life.
