
In 1921 the Cheka discovers a theft of gold and jewelry from the Gokhran treasury, smuggled to Estonia. Agent Maksim Isayev is sent, uncovering that embassy cipher Olenetskaya works with German operative Nolmar and Gokhran officials Kozlovskaya and appraiser Yakov Shelekhes. After a provocation he is arrested and shares a cell with exiled writer Nikandrov. Freed by comrades, Isayev seeks Nikandrov’s return to Russia.
