Spoilers ahead
In 1993, in West Memphis, Arkansas—a working-class, deeply religious town—the lives of three eight-year-old boys were upended when Stevie Branch, Christopher Byers, and Michael Moore vanished from their neighborhood. After an exhaustive search, their bound and brutalized bodies were found the next day. The crime’s violent and sexualized nature quickly led the community and local police to blame a satanic cult, feeding fear and sensationalism that strained friendships and neighborly trust alike.
About a month later, three teenagers—Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Misskelley Jr.—were arrested after Misskelley confessed following twelve hours of interrogation. In the ensuing trial, Baldwin and Misskelley received life sentences, while Echols was sentenced to death; all three continued to proclaim their innocence despite the verdicts.
