Spoilers ahead
Set in a world scarred by a 1982 nuclear war, the landscape is ruled by fallout, radiation-driven mutations, and a complete collapse of national communications. In this harsh new reality, a messianic religion takes shape: the Servants of Wrath, or SOWs, who revere the man they call the creator and detonator of the war’s ultimate weapon, Carleton Lufteufel. The figure’s name carries a grim etymology—a blend of German roots, with Luft meaning air and Teufel meaning Devil—and the faith that grows around him is linked to a stark, anger-driven vision of divinity. The sect’s philosophy is echoed in the book’s title, deus irae, Latin for “God of Wrath,” signaling a worldview that valorizes upheaval and punishment as paths to meaning in a broken world.
